Congratulations to all SGNF alumni who competed at Birmingham 2022!
That’s a wrap on another Commonwealth Games!
Over the course of 11 exciting days, the best athletes from over 72 nations descended on Birmingham across 280 events and 20 sports, with this year marking the third time England has hosted the Games in its 90-year history.
We’re delighted to say that over Birmingham 2022, School Games National Finals Alumni secured 100 medals, split as 31 golds, 35 silvers and 34 bronzes. This means that if SGNF was a competing nation then it would have placed 3rd in the medal table!
Medallists include SGNF 2014 alumni Alex Yee who took home two gold in Triathlon, including the first gold of the of Birmingham 2022!
There was great success for gymnastics where Jake Jarman won an amazing four gold medals, having competed in SGNF 2016. Teammate Joe Fraser, a three-time SGNF competitor, also took home three gold medals.
In athletics, SGNF 2006 alumni Eilish McColgan claimed the top podium in 10,000m, with Katarina Johnson-Thompson – a SGNF competitor in 2009 - taking gold in the Heptathlon.
In the pool, SGNF 2011 alumni Bethany Firth and four-time SGNF competitor Alice Tai both brough back a gold medal each. Finally, two-time SGNF competitor Duncan Scott took home a staggering six medals in swimming - and in doing so he became the most decorated Commonwealth Games athlete for Scotland!
But it isn’t all about appearing on the podium. Around 120 of the 217 SGNF alumni were making their Commonwealth Games debut this year– a massive achievement in itself.
We are incredibly proud of all SGNF alumni at Birmingham 2022 and wish them a huge congratulations.
We have no doubt that their success will have inspired and excited the budding young athletes who will be heading to Loughborough University to compete in this year’s School Games National Finals in September!
