SGNF 2022 heats up on Super Saturday

SGNF 2022 heats up on Super Saturday

The penultimate day of competition sees passion, determination and teamwork all round.

Saturday saw the busiest day at the Loughborough University campus so far, with all ten sports in full swing, including Modern Pentathlon, Cycling – Road and Track, BMX, and Wheelchair Tennis.

We welcomed back Hannah Cockroft and Nathan Maguire to the Paula Radcliffe Stadium delivering their own medal ceremony following School Games National Finals victory over a decade ago. The highlight was watching their mentee, Anya Waugh, take home gold in the 100m Girls Wheelchair Race.

The day also saw another fantastic achievement from Dean Patterson, who broke the U17 Scottish Championship Record, set by him for the 200m.

Michael Kapur Esq OBE, Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire paid the next generation of Commonwealth Games athletes a visit, checking out the various sports in the early afternoon, while presenting medals to the group of Modern Pentathlon and Athletics athletes.

It was fantastic to see Wheelchair Tennis School Games National Final alumni, Abbie Breakwell, back on centre court, taking on the new role as coach for England North. She shared her advice to this year’s athletes competing and we are looking forward to hopefully seeing her compete in the 2023 US Open!

At the Netball Centre, Wheelchair Basketball team England Purple proved successful in their fourth match of the day against England Green. This year’s England Purple team welcomes back School Games National Final 2020 alumni, Charlie McIntyre to the team, who earlier in the summer took home a silver medal at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games for Team England.

We can’t wait for what the final day of SGNF 2022 will bring.

Results from today, Friday and Thursday’s events can be found here.
